The Brooklyn Startup Building Real Life Wall-E for Space Orbit
In a workshop tucked away in Brooklyn, a small team of engineers is building what could be described as a real-life Wall-E—autonomous robots designed to work in the harsh environment of space.
The startup, founded by a group of former aerospace engineers, is developing robotic systems capable of performing maintenance and assembly tasks in orbit. Unlike the lovable Pixar character, these robots are purpose-built for the vacuum of space, equipped with specialized manipulators and computer vision systems.
The technology addresses a growing need in the space industry: as more satellites and space stations populate low Earth orbit, the demand for maintenance, repair, and assembly capabilities continues to increase. Current solutions rely heavily on expensive and time-consuming astronaut EVAs (extravehicular activities).
"We're creating tools that will fundamentally change how work gets done in space," explains one of the co-founders. "Astronaut time is incredibly valuable and limited. By automating routine tasks, we can free up crew members for more complex scientific work."
The company has attracted attention from major aerospace contractors and government agencies interested in reducing the operational costs of space infrastructure.
